If there was a problem with any of the electrical elements in your home, would you be able to tell? Would you know what needed to be done to fix it? When it comes to your electrical system, even the smallest problems can require professional help. Learn how to spot some of the most common electrical issues.
Loose Power Outlets
Loose outlets are surprisingly common. Before investigating a suspected problem, be sure to turn off the power to the area. Remember, safety is your first priority. Sometimes, a loose outlet can be fixed by simply tightening the screws. If you try that and the problem persists, it’s time to call your electrician.
Short Circuits
Have you ever started up your microwave or hair dryer, only to have it turn off by itself shortly after? This is what happens when you’re trying to pull more power out of a breaker than it can handle. When these short circuits happen, it can be irritating, but it’s not usually that big of a deal. The major problem is when the same circuit continues to experience issues. This is a sign of a deeper issue that means you should contact your electrician to come and take a look at things right away.
Malfunctioning Light Switches
If you suspect your light switch is having problems and you intend to investigate it, always make sure you turn off the breaker before moving forward. Use a screwdriver to carefully remove the faceplate. Tighten any loose screws you see. If that doesn’t work, call in the professionals.
Damaged Extension Cords
When extension cords aren’t used properly or are used for extended periods, they can become hazardous. If you notice a damaged cord, simply make sure to get rid of it and purchase a new one. The costs are low, and certainly much less hassle than accidentally causing damage!
